Getting Here
Your Arrival by Airplane
The Netherlands’ international airport is Amsterdam Schiphol. It is one of Europe”s busiest and best-connected airports, with multiple daily flights to major North American cities, Asia, and the rest of the world. Schiphol is only 30 mins from The Hague by train. Trains run about every 10 mins.
Your Arrival by Train
If you come by train to The Hague from another country, you can easily take the Eurostar from London, or the Thalys from Paris or Brussels. Likewise from Brussels, you can take the Intercity Direct, which is a cheaper alternative to the Eurostar/Thalys and requires only a short connection in Rotterdam. From Germany, there are multiple daily high-speed ICE connections from Berlin, Frankfurt, Hannover, or Cologne. From Switzerland, you can take a train departing from Basel.
Your Arrival by Car/Coach
Flixbus and other bus operators run routes to The Hague usually multiple times per day. Nearby cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, or Utrecht are also frequently served and you can take a short train ride (20-40 mins) to The Hague from there. The Netherlands does not usually perform border checks with neighbouring countries due to the EU’s borderless Schengen area. The highway system in The Netherlands does not operate a toll or vignette system.
Visa Requirements
Hooray! – The good news is that you likely do not need a visa. Citizens of the below countries do not require any visa for short-term stays for tourism, education, or any other purpose. “Short-term” refers to a maximum of 90 days. The Summer School is only 12 days (two working weeks).
No visa is required for citizens of: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, all EU citizens, Guatemala, Honduras, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Panama, Peru, South Korea, Switzerland, UAE, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States, and many more (please see here)

Where to Stay
While the summer school does not operate its own accommodations, we are happy to help you find one and have collected an abundance of advice below:
Hotels and AirBnB
There are two hotels we can recommend: The Social Hub The Hague (link) and The Social Hub Delft (link). They are 10 mins and 20mins from The Hague’s city centre. In both cases you will have your own room with an en-suite bathroom. Another straightforward option is to check AirBnB. Similar websites are HousingAnywhere (link), VRBO (link), or HometoGo (link). We also recommend that you check out booking.com.
Popular Websites in The Netherlands
The page “kamer.nl” offers a range of rooms, studios, and short-term apartments (link). A similar option that usually has a greater number of short-term (weekly, etc.) places to stay is “kamernet.nl” (link). For these platforms, you might need to enter the Dutch word for The Hague (“Den Haag”) into your search criteria. You can also try widen the dates for your search beyond the summer school dates. This is because a student or other person living in The Hague and going abroad themselves for July might offer their place cheaper for a whole month than a hostel or AirBnB costs for the specific dates of the summer school.
Take a Quick Ride into Town
The Netherlands is a very (very!) small country. If you do not find an accommodation in The Hague, or prefer a stay in Amsterdam or elsewhere, you can look outside The Hague. To make this convenient for you, we are listing cities below from where it takes only a short train ride into The Hague. Trains run roughly every 20 mins, are safe, easy to use, punctual, and one of the most common forms of transport in The Netherlands.
Cities that are not even a 15 mins ride away are: Delft, Leiden, Rijswijk, Zoetermeer. Pro tip: Delft and Leiden are (international) student cities and very picturesque places. Cities that are less than 30 mins by train are: Rotterdam, Utrecht, Haarlem, Gouda. The bustling and trendy capital city of The Netherlands, Amsterdam, is 38 mins from The Hague. Amsterdam is one of the world’s foremost tourism destinations and will provide you with plenty of options to stay. We are Happy to Help and be the Matchmaker
If you want to share a place (like an AirBnB) with another summer school student, we are happy to get those who have been successfully admitted in touch with each other. Sharing a place can significantly reduce your expenses. If you want to share a place with a specific person like a friend, classmate, your partner, or anyone else, please mention this in your application.
Further Administrative Points
As we will visit a number of embassies and high-profile international organisations, rules of decorum apply. In other words, please pack at least one smart casual outfit for the summer school. On sessions taught in the classroom, no particular dress code applies. For security reasons, the embassy of Estonia and the OPCW (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) require us to submit your names and nationalities prior to the visit. Please also be aware that the speakers or details of sessions listed above might change at short notice due to unforeseen (global/political) circumstances. We will seek to not let this affect the teaching content of the summer school, but it might mean slight modifications in the delivery of specific sessions.

As we can only admit 28 students from around the world we encourage you to apply early. To give you plenty of time for the rest of your trip’s planning until July, we will reply to your application within two days. Before applying, please carefully read the sections “Who is this Summer School for?” and “Admission Requirements“. Exceptions to the admission requirements, fees, or application deadline will not be facilitated.
